Tottenham are struggling for form in the Premier League

Despite Spurs embarking on an impressive five-game winning streak before their bewildering away loss to Brighton, they have struggled to pick up victories in the Premier League with just ten points in seven games. That has to go down as one of the club’s worst starts in recent history.

Following first-half goals from James Maddison and Brennan Johnson, it appeared that Tottenham might be carrying their cup competition form into the league, but a second-half collapse saw Spurs slump to defeat at the Amex.

Postecoglou stated that the loss was his “worst defeat since I’ve been here [Tottenham]. Unacceptable second half. Nowhere near where we should be. We got carried away with how we were going”. (Mirror)

Deeney has defended Postecoglou following the defeat

Former Premier League striker, Troy Deeney, has defended Ange Postecoglou after Spurs’ disappointing defeat, explaining on his TikTok page: “I actually feel sorry for the fella you know.”

Deeney then went on to suggest the blame lies more with Spurs’ players, suggesting: “You look at how Spurs play, they play some good stuff, they attack well and score loads of goals, but when it comes to defending, people blame the manager for defending, but how can you put on a session that stops people miss-kicking a ball?

“You can’t do anything about poor defending, the last goal for example, Rutter shouldn’t be getting that, foul him, then when you get to the byline Bentancur is there, just get it.

“I think when you look at Ange, I would challenge people to look at the goals they concede, they’re not structural damage ones, they’re not struggling, it’s man to man, me vs you, that’s more mentality.”

Tottenham once almost signed Troy Deeney

Deeney, who has 47 Premier League goals to his name, almost joined Tottenham just four years ago with the player recently revealing he had talks with former manager, Jose Mourinho, over a move.

Sky Sports revealed in the closing days of the 2020 summer transfer window that Deeney was a potential target for Spurs who were seeking an understudy for Harry Kane, although the Lilywhites decided to sign Brazilian striker, Carlos Vinicius, instead.

Troy Deeney revealed his conversation with Mourinho over the prospective move at the time, explaining: “I had a chat with him [Mourinho], and it was like, what do you want to do? How do you want to do it? Would you be able to go from being a main man to one of the squad?

“I said, all I’m going to do is push Harry [Kane] to be the best that he can and be his biggest cheerleader because playing for Spurs was massively beyond my dreams.” (Talk Sport)
