Pundit says there is one major question mark over Ange Postecoglou at Spurs

Craig Burley believes the jury is still very much out on whether Ange Postecoglou’s style of play can succeed in the Premier League.

Knives are out

While there was a lot of praise for Postecoglou and Tottenham over recent weeks as the Lilywhites won five consecutive games across all competitions, the mood has shifted since the harrowing defeat to Brighton.

The same questions have once again been raised about Spurs’ defending and the knives are out again for the Australian, who is being accused of naivety and even arrogance (Optus Sport).

Burley says big question marks over Ange

Burley has now asserted that we are yet to see any sort of evidence that Postecoglou’s style of play will work over the course of a full season.

The pundit suggested that while the 59-year-old is good at coaching attacking football, it will lead to nothing if he does not shore up Tottenham’s defence.

Burley told ESPN FC: “I think Postecoglou’s style in England has yet to prove that it can survive the long game, and by that, I mean the eternity of a season.

“Yes, they’ll play great football. Yeah, they’ll have their moments, but he has to prove that this style can survive a 38-game season and shore up defensively.

“He’s a great coach at coaching his side to play this great attacking football, but unfortunately, his defenders would be redundant if it was just about attacking football. So he has to prove that he can get the balance right. And if he doesn’t, all this great football will just go for nothing.”

Counter-example

Postecoglou will point to examples of Manchester City and Liverpool (under Jurgen Klopp) as reasons why high-intensity and a ultra-attacking approach with a high defensive line can succeed in the Premier League.

The difference is that those sides have better squads than Tottenham currently do, which is why the North London side remain a work in progress.
