Paul Scholes rips into experienced Tottenham star for the most basic mistake

Paul Scholes believes one of Tottenham’s senior players failed to do his job in the second half against Brighton at the weekend.

Individual errors at the back

All three of the goals that Tottenham conceded in the second half were preventable, arising from lapses in concentration at the back.

Destiny Udogie and Rodrigo Bentancur were particularly guilty, with the former’s hacked clearance leading to the home side’s first goal while the latter somehow failed to stop the cross from coming into the box for the Seagulls’ third.

However, Scholes has pointed out another Tottenham man’s role in Danny Welbeck’s headed goal, which gave Fabian Hurzeler’s men all three points.

Romero ball-watching

Scholes points out that while Bentancur should have dealt with the situation, it was incumbent on Cristian Romero to expect the ball to come into the box.

He suggested that while Welbeck was anticipating the cross, the Tottenham captain on the day was caught ball-watching, not being aware of the threat around him.

The former Man Utd midfielder told Premier League Productions (06/10/24 at 6:40 pm): “It was a great goal and a brilliant tackle, more than anything (from Rutter). Again, Udogie’s a little bit weak in his defensive display.

“I think Bentancur also tries to actually see the ball out. A great retrieving tackle from Rutter. You have to say that it’s a little lucky that it falls to Danny Welbeck.

“But watch Romero, absolutely sleeping, he actually thinks that Bentancur is in control of it. You can’t do that. You have to anticipate that your forward, the man you are marking, it might come to him. You stay with him. But he is just absolutely ball-watching, Danny steps in front, uses his experience and finishes it well.”

Romero’s mistakes now a pattern

Scholes’ point about Romero is fair and this is not the first time that the centre-back has been caught out this season.

The 26-year-old has not lived up to the high standards he set for himself last season and has been guilty of a few unforced errors that have led to goals.
