Post-season friendlies

A few clubs have now started playing friendlies after the conclusion of their season in order to increase their bottom line and to seek commercial opportunities.

Tottenham did that earlier this year when they travelled to Australia to take on Newcastle just days after the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

The decision was not popular with the players and it has since been reported by some outlets that the North London club will not be repeating this in the future (The Telegraph).

Son’s admission

Both Son and Ange Postecoglou have voiced their support for the movement to decrease the number of games in the footballing calendar.

Wyness believes that this might prevent Spurs from considering playing post-season friendlies, with the North London club thus missing out on significant revenue.

The former Everton and Aston Villa chief told Football Insider: “The big debate has been about player burnout and too many games, players going on strike and so on. This is a big part of that, flying around the world after the season.

“If clubs are going to complain about burnout then these tours are one area in the firing line. Spurs are paying heed to that, and it makes sense.

“While it could bring in anywhere from £2 million up to £5 million, it’s one area which has to be foregone. We’ll have to see if players start putting in their contracts that they’ll only play a certain amount of games in a season.”

Increasing financial pressures

While player welfare is something Tottenham and other top clubs would have to be mindful of, at the same time, these clubs are now under tremendous financial pressure, given the restrictions put in place.

With fans demanding that clubs fork out huge sums in transfer fees and wages, the only way for them to do that under PSR would be to increase revenue streams.

As a result, we will likely see more and more clubs host post-season friendlies over the coming years.
