Ian Wright believes Ange Postecoglou’s confident assertion about always winning a trophy in his second season might well come true at Tottenham.

Postecoglou’s lofty ambitions

Unlike some of Postecoglou’s predecessors at Spurs, who tended to play down the club’s chances of competing with the best sides in the Premier League, the Australian has not been shy of publicly announcing his lofty ambitions.

The 59-year-old even admitted that he would consider this season to be a failure if he does not guide the Lilywhites to silverware (Football.London).

Ian Wright is now a believer

Some will feel that the Tottenham boss is needlessly putting more pressure on himself and his players with his comments, but Wright is a fan of Postecoglou’s confidence, insisting that the 59-year-old can achieve the ambitions that he has voided.

The Arsenal legend told Premier League Productions: “I think, if we’re gonna judge him on his last result, he’s confident in himself to say that [he always wins in his second seasons], and when you look at the way Tottenham play, and of course injuries are key, you could see that Tottenham side winning a trophy.”

Julien Laurens agreed with Wright’s assessment, insisting that Tottenham can beat anyone on their day.

The French football expert said: “Yeah, like the Europa League, since there are no teams dropping down from the big one [Champions League], I think they’ll have a chance, and in the two domestic clubs as well.

“When Plan A works, like it worked yesterday, it’s possible. Of course, it didn’t work against Arsenal and Newcastle, but if they can do Plan A better, then they can beat anybody on the day.”

Postecoglou’s attempts to change Spurs’ culture

By publicly voicing his ambitions to win silverware, Postecoglou is sending out a message to his own club and players.

The Australian evidently wants to change the mentality of seeing a top-four finish as a success, which has been the case at Spurs for the best part of the last two decades.

However, the media will undoubtedly try to get under his skin and throw his quotes back at him whenever there is a setback along the way.
