Postecoglou admits summer signing could play in new position this evening

Ange Postecoglou has left the door open to using Archie Gray in a completely new role against Ferencvaros.

Tottenham short of options at the back

Spurs are short of options at the back ahead of their clash in Hungary this evening, with Destiny Udogie not making the trip, Radu Dragusin suspended, and Djed Spence not in the Europa League squad.

With Tottenham also having a big game against Brighton this Sunday, it remains to be seen whether Postecoglou will risk starting both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.

The Spurs boss might thus have to come up with a creative solution for this evening’s clash and he has now hinted at what that could be.

Gray to be tried in a new role?

Postecoglou has now revealed that he is open to trying Archie Gray as a centre-back after the youngster impressed in that position during pre-season.

The Australian remarked that the 18-year-old’s versatility is what made him such an attractive option for Spurs in the summer.

When asked about the possibility of the former Leeds man being used in the heart of the defence, Postecoglou told Football.London: “I think Archie can play centre-back. He’s obviously played full-back, played midfield, played probably left-back. He’s a pretty versatile player and that’s one of the reasons we were really excited to bring him to the club.

“He takes in information well and with Radu being suspended and Destiny out, we’ll definitely need him at the back. We’ve got a couple of different options about where we use him, but I’d be comfortable using him in any of those areas.”

One of Van de Ven and Romero to be rested?

It is unlikely that both Van de Ven and Romero will feature against Ferencvaros. The big question is which one of the two will be rested?

Ange has the option of resting the Dutchman and playing Ben Davies at centre-back, with Gray slotting in at left-back. Conversely, if he chooses to rest Romero, he could use Davies at left-back and Gray at centre-back.
