James Maddison opens up on England recall and what he has in common with Erling Haaland

James Maddison is in red hot form and appears to be back to his best now, and the Spurs midfielder has drawn parallels between his own situation and that of Erling Haaland as he looks to explain why he is playing so well lately.

A break worked wonders for Maddison

After signing for Spurs last summer, James Maddison settled in immediately in North London and was one of the star players in the club’s ten game unbeaten run at the start of the season.

Sadly, an injury suffered in early November kept Maddison out of action for more than two months, and he was not quite able to hit those highs again in the backend of the campaign.

This led to disappointment over the summer, with the midfielder missing out on the Euro 2024 squad with England, but speaking to the press on Wednesday (via Football.London), Maddison suggested that break over the summer may have done him good.

He said: “I feel really good at the minute. I feel as fit as I’ve ever felt, really. I feel like my fitness is at an optimum level. Having a break over the summer, not going to the Euros, it does help.

“I know it’s been spoken about with Erling Haaland how he’s had a summer off and he hit the ground running and I feel the same. I feel really good. I feel confident. I feel alive on the pitch at the minute.”

The England call-up will come for Maddison

A new England squad is announced on Thursday, and Maddison will of course be hoping to be involved for the first time since June, and get his first call-up from caretaker coach, Lee Carsley.

Discussing that whole situation, Maddison added: “I want to be in the squad. It’s simple, every England player will tell you that. I know Lee Carsley, I worked with him at Coventry, he was my assistant with the England Under-21s under Aidy Boothroyd who I had for a few years in a European Championship.

“I always say the same cliched thing when I get asked about the England stuff. It’s if I just take care of my performances for Spurs, which I feel like I’m doing at the minute to a high level, then the other stuff will take care of itself, hopefully.

“I always want to prove doubters wrong and that’s where I get my hunger from. I want to do the best I can for Tottenham Hotspur. I’ll just continue with that mindset and mentality and hopefully it will get me to where I want to be.”

Spurs need an injury-free year for Maddison

James Maddison can be the key to Spurs getting success this year, if he can just stay fit. Obviously, other players are crucial, too, like Dominic Solanke as the focal point and the defence have to be on top form, too, but Maddison is the kind of player who dictates the whole rhythm of the team.
