Midfielder admits he was struggling for confidence at Tottenham – ‘At its lowest’

One former Tottenham Hotspur player admits that he was struggling mentally towards the end of his time at the North London club after being overlooked by multiple managers.

Dreams of becoming a Spurs hero shattered

Fans always love it when footballers come through the ranks of the academy to play for the first-team as it means a bit more to those players, who tend to wear the club’s colours with pride.

That was the case with Harry Winks when he first broke into the Spurs set-up, with the youngster appearing on his way to become a legend at the club.

However, his dreams did not come true, with his career taking a turn for the worse following the departure of Mauricio Pochettino in 2019.

Winks makes admission about Spurs exit

The former England international was overlooked by Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte, eventually deciding to call time on his spell at the club in the summer of 2023.

Winks has become a mainstay in the Leicester City midfield since his switch to the King Power Stadium, playing a key role in helping them get promoted to the Premier League.

When asked if it would be fair to say his confidence was at the lowest point in his final year or two at Tottenham, the 28-year-old told Stadium Astro: “Yeah. It would be yeah. I’ve said it before it was difficult.

“Because you know when you want to play regularly and you want to show the club, the fans, the manager what you can do and you don’t get regular game time, it’s always difficult.

“It was always tough to perform and play my best football, so my confidence was definitely at its lowest in that spell, but that’s why I made the decision to leave and try to find football elsewhere.”

Missed opportunity for Winks?

While most Spurs fans will agree that the time had come for Winks and Tottenham to part ways last year, one does wonder if Ange Postecoglou could have helped the midfielder revive his career.

The 28-year-old would have felt at home in the Australian’s system and might have thrived if allowed to express himself.

He never got that chance under the likes of Mourinho and Conte, who were more concerned with what their midfielders did off the ball to close down spaces rather than on it.
