Postecoglou explains why he made Vicario Tottenham’s fourth captain

It was a big week for Guglielmo Vicario as he wore the captain’s armband for Tottenham for the first time in the Europa League win over Qarabag on Thursday night. Now, Ange Postecoglou has explained why he wanted the keeper as part of his leadership group.

Vicario has grown into a leader

Tottenham had a tricky tie with the Azerbaijan champions to open their Europa League campaign, made all the more difficult by Radu Dragusin’s clumsy red card after just seven minutes. But, with clinical finishing and an incredible performance from Vicario, Spurs emerged victorious.

Heung-min Son started the game but departed after 70 minutes, leaving Vicario to take up the armband and lead the team for the remainder of the game.

This comes after he was added to Postecoglou‘s leadership group in the summer alongside Son, James Maddison, and Cristian Romero.

Speaking to the press (via Football.London) about why he wanted Vicario in the group, Postecoglou discussed how much the Italian has improved both on and off the pitch, and how influential he can be.

He said: “I’ve seen his growth, he’s really positive, comes in and wants to work, comes in on his days off, he’s a great example to everyone and I thought he could add something to our leadership group and it was great for him to get the armband last night.”

A special moment for Vicario

Vicario himself has spoken on the momentous occasion, revealing how proud he is to have been given the responsibility.

He posted on Instagram: “A day that I will not forget. The first one as captain, leading this great club, at home, in a European cup and more importantly getting the three points. Proud. This one is for the fans that are always by our side no matter what.”

He’s a good choice for leadership

It makes sense to get Vicario in the leadership group. He’s a more mature head, he’s passionate and vocal, and as the number one goalkeeper, he’s likely to play the majority of our games this season. He clearly loves the club and that kind of attitude will only make him a good leader, I’m sure.
