Sonny feeling fatigued

Heung-min Son played another 70 minutes against Qarabag on Thursday night, leading his team in the Europa League opener as the Lilywhites stormed to a 3-0 win.

So far this season, Son has played the full 90 minutes in all five of Tottenham’s Premier League games, plus another 28 minutes in the Carabao Cup.

Many had expected the South Korean to be rested for the Europa League game, but Ange Postecoglou stuck with his skipper from the start to ensure they got the job done.

Speaking after the game about the condition of his star man (via Football.London), Postecoglou revealed Son had mentioned he was feeling tired, but he doesn’t quite know the full extent of that fatigue issue

He said: “[Son] said he was a bit tired but I haven’t spoken to him or the medical staff yet.”

In a tweet on the night, reporter Alasdair Gold explained that he and the rest of the press initially thought Postecoglou had described Son as feeling “tight” but that the comment had been misheard, and it was indeed tiredness that Son had mentioned to Postecoglou.

When will Son get a rest?

It is shaping up to be yet another intense and busy season for Son. Last season, he played every game for Spurs aside from a five-game spell during January when he was away with South Korea at the Asian Cup.

Naturally, as captain, Son will be expected to play most games, but with Spurs involved in four competitions this term, the 32-year-old will need a break at some point.

Postecoglou can’t push Son too far

We all know Sonny loves to play and whenever he is fit, he will be in the lineup. But, it’s worth remembering how much his 2022/23 campaign was impacted by fatigue and fitness issues.

He’s a crucial player for us, but we need to keep him fit and sharp and not overwork him. I would definitely look to give him a rest in the Carabao Cup and/or the Europa League in the next few weeks.
