Glasgow City 8 Queen’s Park 0

Queen’s Park begin their period of two consecutive away games with defeat to Glasgow City at K Park in East Kilbride.

Following their 3-0 defeat at home to Montrose, Head Coach Craig Joyce made nine changes to his starting eleven with Ciara Bonner and Chloe Muir the only players remaining. Hannah Cunningham missed her first match of the new season as she served her one-match ban. Morgan Hay and Ellie Kane missed out due to injuries and are set to be on the sidelines for a few weeks. Goalkeeper Lucy Inman made her first appearance of the season for Queen’s Park as Lauren McGregor was named on the bench alongside Ami Robertson, Millie Paton, Emma Craig and Olivia King.

Abby Callaghan got the match underway in the Glasgow sunshine wearing the captain’s armband in her third start of the ScottishPower WPL 1 season.

The hosts looked to get themselves off to the best possible start with an attack in the first minute but Ciara Bonner snubbed their attacking advantage. Glasgow City found themselves on the front foot again soon after when a clearance from the City defence found Brenna Lovera as she looked to take the ball over the top of Inman.

The hosts managed to find the net from their next attack as Natalia Wrobel picked up a pass and finished from 12 yards.

Fifteen minutes into the match, Lisa Evans fired a dangerous ball towards goal but Lucy Inman did well to tip it over the bar. Ciara Bonner intercepted the short corner and ended another promising attack.

Queen’s Park created their first half-chance of the match as Charlize McFadyen utilised her pace and made a great run down the right-hand side but was unfortunately the ball was intercepted before she could get the cross into the box.

Shortly after, Rachel Wright did well to block City’s next attack and create a counterattack for her side. Unfortunately, Monica Harty’s pass was out of reach for Jordan McLintock.

Glasgow City came knocking again as Brenna Lovera fired a shot off the post before it returned into play and allowed City to create another chance but Darcy Molley was there with a well-timed sliding tackle to bring an end to the threat.

With fifteen left to play in the first, Glasgow City almost found their second goal, only for Murron Cunningham to make a great block sending it behind. The corner was missed by everyone in the box and went out for a throw-in on the opposite side.

Queen’s Park found themselves in a period of great defensive play; practically blocking everything that Glasgow City were sending their way. Ciara Bonner made a crucial block in the 34th minute to end City’s attack before regaining possession. Lucy Inman collected well after beating a charging Lisa Evans down the right-hand side and minutes later, Murron Cunningham made another vital block to send it out of play.

Glasgow City came close again with only the additional minutes left to play in the half. Lucy Inman made a great close-range save to deny Brenna Lovera and sent it out for a corner. The set-piece was initially defended, but from the cross back into the box that Lisa Forrest managed to convert.

Queen’s Park came out into the second-half having made one substitute at half-time with Ami Robertson coming on to replace Jordan McLintock.

Glasgow City opened their account for the half early-on as a sliding tackle from just inside the box had Steven MacDonald pointing to the spot and Nicole Kozlova converting.

Lucy Inman denied Glasgow City their fourth with 50 minutes played as she got down to make a difficult save, sending it behind for a corner. The corner was taken quickly and played short but the whipped in cross found Brenna Lovera and her header was sent off target.

Seven minutes later, City found their fourth as Sofia MAATTA found the back of the net after a composed finish. On the hour mark, she doubled her tally and extended her side’s lead to five after a well-taken shot from outside the penalty area.

Queen’s Park responded with a triple substitution in which Emma Craig, Millie Paton and Rosie McQuillan came on to replace Chloe Muir, Charlize McFadyen and Monica Harty.

Much to the dismay of The Spiders, the goals kept coming for Glasgow City with the next coming three minutes after the changes. Aleigh Gambone got herself on the scoresheet as she slotted home with a shot into the bottom corner. City found themselves with a quick-fire second as Nicole Kozlova scored her second and Glasgow City’s seventh.

Queen’s Park made their final chance of the match in the 73rd minute with Megan Quigley coming off to be replaced by Olivia King.

Ami Robertson looked to be through on goal with nine minutes left of the ninety, but her great run and shot were cancelled out by the raising of the offside flag.

Glasgow City searched for another via a short free-kick but the well-driven cross was plucked from the air by Lucy Inman. The 17-year-old shot stopper made another great save as Nicole Kozlova looked to catch it well before Inman got her hands to it.

The hosts found their eight courtesy of Lisa Evans’ well-directed cross finding the grateful Kozlova who converted to seal her hat-trick. City looked sure to make it nine soon after but Lucy Inman got down low to make a great save with her legs.
