Pundit suggests Dominic Solanke will be ‘delighted’ with Saudi transfer business

Dominic Solanke’s Tottenham career hasn’t really started yet, but Gabriel Agbonlahor says one big move that happened on transfer deadline day could give the Spurs man a boost when it comes to his England chances.

Toney’s England career could be over

After being linked with a number of different strikers through the summer, Tottenham opted to sign Solanke in a big-money move from Bournemouth.

The 26-year-old was unable to find the net on his debut in a 1-1 draw against Leicester City, and picked up a knock in that game that has seen him miss the last two matches for Spurs.

However, when he is back, there is an expectation that Solanke will fire Spurs to glory, or at least take them to the next level as Ange Postecoglou continues his project at the club.

It could all have been very different for Spurs, though, as they were strongly linked with a move for Ivan Toney, before choosing Solanke. The former Brentford man is now playing in Saudi Arabia, and Agbonlahor thinks that transfer has done Solanke a big favour.

He told talkSPORT (Sept 6, 7:16 am): “If you are someone like Solanke, you will be like okay, I am up the pecking order here. He is delighted, isn’t he, Toney is gone. He is like, let me get myself fit, I am going to score goals for Spurs. He should be looking at that England squad and be like that’s me.”

Was Solanke the right call?

It is thought Solanke was always the top target for Spurs in attack, and while many clubs held conversations regarding Toney, the 28-year-old was left with no other option but to make the switch to Saudi Arabia.

Solanke scored 21 goals in all competitions for Bournemouth last season (Transfermarkt).

Spurs Web Opinion

As long as things go to plan for Solanke at Spurs, which I think they will, I would say you have to put him up there with Ollie Watkins as the potential alternative to Harry Kane in the England setup.

And, given Kane is now into his thirties, the Three Lions will need the next striker to step up soon.
