La Liga expert Terry Gibson is at a loss as to why Johnny Cardoso is not starting for Real Betis, given the issues that the La Liga side are having in midfield this season.
Tottenham have a buy option for Johnny Cardoso
As has been well documented, Tottenham have secured a rather unusual agreement as part of their Giovani Lo Celso sale to Beits on transfer deadline day.
The North London club now have the option to sign Cardoso for around £25m, with the option only though to be valid for a two-week period in next summer’s transfer window (The Telegraph).
Some might view that as a very shrewd move by Tottenham, given the way the 22-year-old quickly established himself as Betis’ midfield general after breaking into their starting eleven last season.
Johnny Cardoso is not starting matches
However, the worrying thing for Spurs is that the USA international has not had the best of starts to the new campaign, having been left out of the starting eleven by Manuel Pellegrini in all three of the club’s La Liga games so far.
Gibson is quite confused by Pellegrini’s decision, pointing out that Cardoso has done well after coming on as a substitute, and questioning why the former Manchester City boss does not start the youngster.
The pundit told La Liga Weekly about Betis’ performance against Real Madrid: “Their all-round play was good, defensively they were solid, midfield I’m slightly baffled why Johnny Cardoso is not playing after playing so well last season.
“Marc Roca and [William] Carvalho are playing ahead of him every game now and yet, when he comes on, he still does a good job, so I’m baffled at that one.”

Perhaps Cardoso is still not quite at his peak fitness yet or maybe he is carrying a niggle.
One would think that the youngster will be back in Betis’ starting eleven sooner, especially given that Los Verdiblancos are still winless in the league this season.
