AVB won’t go down in the Spurs history books

Villas-Boas’ time at the club will not be remembered fondly by most Spurs fans, with the Portuguese coach’s reign sandwiched between Harry Redknapp and Mauricio Pochettino, both of whom had success at the club.

Villas-Boas’s first season at White Hart Lane was relatively promising, with the Portuguese coach leading the club to a fifth-place finish in 2012-13, but his second season proved disastrous after the departure of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.

He ended up losing his job just a few months into his second campaign at Tottenham, with the North London club turning to Tim Sherwood as interim boss before Pochettino joined the club in 2014.

Kyle Walker was in tears when AVB left

Walker insisted that the former Spurs boss did not have enough time to get the best out of the squad following the wholesale changes in the summer of 2013.

The Manchester City star said on You’ll Never Beat Kyle Walker podcast: “Bale was a massive, massive loss. They signed seven players off the back of the Bale money. There’s a lot of changes there and we just never really gelled in time for him [Villas-Boas] to then do well.”

The England international admitted that he and his teammates were distraught when Villas-Boas told them he had been sacked.

The 34-year-old added: “I’ve got tears running down my eyes… Michael Dawson is welling up. That’s how much he meant to the lads.

“For 10 or 12 men to be crying because the manager’s gone, he’s done something well in the dressing room”.

Spurs Web Opinion

It sounds like Villas-Boas was a fantastic manager and a lovely person. However, his football was turgid, arguably being up there with the worst of Antonio Conte and one can understand why Levy decided to pull the plug on the project when he did.
