Spurs could earn an extra £3.4m from Lo Celso sale under one condition – Journalist

Journalist Alonso Rivero reveals that Tottenham have received an initial €5m (£4.2m) from Real Betis for Giovani Lo Celso but they will be owed more each time Real Betis qualify for the Champions League over the next four years.

Tottenham sold Lo Celso to Real Betis on deadline day

Lo Celso completed a deadline day return to Betis, which did not come as a surprise, but it is unclear how much fee Spurs got for the midfielder, with various numbers being suggested by different outlets.

Rivero has now explained that the deal is a complicated one, with the Spanish club paying just an initial fee of £4.2m for the Argentine international.

However, there were some potential add-ons included in the deal that took Lo Celso from Spurs to Spain.

Spurs could get more for Lo Celso with add-ons

He explains that the clause in the deal means that Tottenham will be owed €1m (£840k) by Betis each year that they qualify for the Champions League for the next four years.

However, the journalist reveals that Spurs will only be owed that fee if the 28-year-old plays at least 50 per cent of the games in each of those campaigns.

That means that Spurs could potentially make as much as €9m (£7.5m) for the Argentina international if Manuel Pellegrini’s side qualify for the Champions League for the next four years.

Betis missed out on the Champions League by 19 points last season, and they are certainly not one of the favourites to make the top four this year.

So this clause is not particularly favourable to Spurs, which is why they secured the option to buy Johnny Cardoso to sweeten the deal.
