Veliz was the hero for Espanyol

Veliz opened his account for Espanyol in dramatic fashion on Saturday, with the on-loan Tottenham man scoring a winner with what was essentially the final kick of the game to give his side their first three points of the season.

The centre-forward showed tremendous composure and technique with his finish, taking a touch to make space for himself in the box before unleashing a thunderous striker into the top corner.

The moment of magic from the 20-year-old shows just why many in Argentine football are excited about him and why Spurs paid £12m to sign him from Rosario Central last summer.

Espanyol are already loving Alejo Veliz

Veliz will be hoping this is the first of many goals to come for him this season at Catalonia and his manager is convinced that the youngster will continue to grow as he gets more experience under his belt.

Gutierrez told Sport about the striker after his side’s 2-1 against Rayo Vallecano: “He has a great future in European football.

“He is very young (20 years old) and he has to go through a toll that we all have to go through. He will continue to grow and every day we will see a better player.”

Veliz’s strike on Sunday and these words of praise by his manager will do the youngster’s confidence a world of good.

He will be hoping to catch Postecoglou’s eye this season and prove to the Tottenham boss that he can score goals at the highest level.
