National manager is confident his ‘incredible’ player will come good at Spurs

New Wales boss Craig Bellamy is confident that Brennan Johnson will evolve into an elite player for both club and country, insisting that the Tottenham star has all the attributes one looks for in an attacker.

Johnson has become a bit of a scapegoat among a section of Spurs fans on social media since his big-money move from Nottingham Forest 12 months ago.

While the winger’s numbers are more than decent and he has shown many glimpses of his qualities, he has struggled for consistency, tending to blow hot and cold.

Ange Postecoglou will hope that the 23-year-old takes his game to the next level this season now that he has had time to settle into his new surroundings and get accustomed to his system.

Craig Bellamy sees something in Johnson

Bellamy is confident that Johnson will explode, describing the winger as ‘elite’ and insisting that Tottenham did not overpay for him.

The Wales boss said (via Yahoo Sport): “I see an incredible footballer in Brennan. He hits all the marks you’d want him to hit. I believe there’s so much more to come because what he can offer is elite. He’s really elite.

“If I was the manager at Spurs for instance, would I have signed him? Yes. Would I have paid 50-odd million? And more. So that gives you a certain level of what I see with this player. And I’m looking forward to that as well.”

However, Bellamy acknowledged that the Spurs star needs to become a little more ruthless in the final third to get to the next level.

He added: “Now maybe he needs to be a little bit more selfish and ruthless to back the ability he has. I’d like to be able to see that with Wales as well. I’m sure it’s going to come very soon. “That’s exciting for me as well. Just to get a feel for him.”

Johnson evidently has the raw materials, and we have seen that he can be a nightmare to play against on his day. It is now a question of whether the winger can deliver consistently.

He has a lot of competition for his place in the side this season and it will be a real test of his character to see if he rises to the occasion or gets bogged down.
