Veliz had a nightmare in Seville

Veliz’s loan spell at Sevilla during the second half of last season was one to forget for the striker, who hardly got a look in during his six months at Andalusia.

The former Rosaria Central man has already racked up more minutes for Espanyol than he did during his time in Seville, having started all four La Liga matches for the newly promoted club so far.

The 20-year-old made a decisive contribution against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, producing a brilliant finish on the half-turn with what was essentially the final kick of the game to give his side a 2-1 win.

Wild celebrations ensued at the Stage Front Stadium in Catalonia as Veliz was mobbed by his teammates after the goal.

Veliz gives an emotional speech after scoring winner

The on-loan Tottenham man was quite emotional after the full-time whistle, admitting that he had endured a difficult year and thanking those who stood by him during that time.

The youngster said (via Futbol en Movistar Plus+): “I had a year that honestly wasn’t great for me footballistically. I just want to thank my family, my girlfriend who always supported me, the coaching staff for giving me the chance to come here and prove myself, and my teammates.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Veliz needed to get a goal early to send him on his way and this strike will do wonders for the 20-year-old’s confidence and will help him believe that he belongs at this level.

Hopefully, this is the first of many for the Argentine this season.
