Postecoglou names one Spurs player he thought played well against Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur were left frustrated once again at St. James’ Park today as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Newcastle United. Speaking after the game, though, Ange Postecoglou had positive things to say about one of his players.

An important experience for Dragusin

Postecoglou‘s men went in a goal down at half-time after being hit by a suckerpunch thanks to a quick Newcastle throw and a neat finish from Harvey Barnes.

In the second half, Spurs came out with intensity and eventually levelled the scores with an own goal from Dan Burn. A number of chances followed, but the Lilywhites were unable to put the ball in the net.

Then, with ten minutes left, Newcastle punished the wasteful visitors, with Jacob Murphy breaking through the Spurs defence and laying on for Alexander Isak to slot into an open net and secure all three points.

In his post-match press conference (via Football.London), Postecoglou was asked about the role Radu Dragusin played in the game, after coming in for the injured Micky van de Ven, and he suggested it will be a valuable experience for the Romanian.

He said: “I thought he was good Radu. It was a great opportunity to expose him. I mean, he’s only 22. He’s still a young man, especially for a defender and I thought exposing him to this atmosphere and the threat, the particular threat that Newcastle posed with Isak up front, he had to be really concentrated and I thought he was.

“I think he’s going to play a big part in our season. Him coming through that, that whole experience, will set him up well.”

Patience from Dragusin

Since arriving at Spurs from Genoa in January, Dragusin has had to remain patient and take the few opportunities for game time that have come his way.

The 22-year-old has impressed every time he has played, though, and despite the defeat today, will have done his reputation no harm.

Spurs Web Opinion

It was a good performance from Dragusin, all things considered. I don’t think any of the defence can be happy with the nature of the goals we conceded, but Radu at least made big challenges when it mattered, and will take confidence from his own display today.
