Boston College Releases Statement After Johnny Gaudreau’s Death

The NHL world woke up Friday to the tragic news that Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew Gaudreau died Thursday.

According to New Jersey State Police, the brothers were killed by an alleged drunk driver while they were riding their bicycles. Johnny Gaudreau was 31 and Matthew Gaudreau was 29; they were planning on attending their sister's wedding Friday.

"The entire BC community is stunned by the tragic news," Boston College posted on X. "Johnny Gaudreau was not only one of the greatest (Boston College hockey players) but also one of the nicest. Matthew was a gifted player & beloved by teammates. Our prayers are with the Gaudreau family at this time of unimaginable loss."

Boston College men's hockey also had a statement.

"The Boston College Athletics Department and its men's hockey program are devasted and mourn the tragic loss of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau on Thursday night. Johnny, 31, and Matthew, 29, were shining stars on and off the ice for the Eagles. ... We extend our deepest sympathies to the entire Gaudreau family and mourn with them during this time of tragedy."

The brothers played for the Eagles under head coach Jerry York, who offered his condolences to their family after finding out about the news. Johnny Gaudreau was a standout at Boston College and continued his success in the NHL with the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets. Matthew Gaudreau played for multiple teams in the AHL and ECHL after his collegiate career.

The Boston Bruins were among many in the NHL world to also send their condolences.
