UB women's soccer pulls off historic upset over No. 7 Pittsburgh

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- The UB women's soccer team made program history on Thursday evening with a 2-1 victory over No. 7 Pittsburgh on the road.

The win gave the Bulls their first win over a top 10-ranked school in team history. It also marked the third win over a Power 5 opponent during head coach Shawn Burke's 11-year tenure.

UB (2-0-0) broke the deadlock in the 10th minute, as a scramble in the box after a corner kick saw the ball fall to midfielder Kaya Schultz, who powered it past the Pitt goalkeeper to make it 1-0 Bulls.

The Panthers equalized in the 24th minute when Samiah Phiri fired home a rebound that Bulls goalkeeper Lexie Thompson got hands on, but could not keep out. The match remained tied 1-1 at halftime.

The eventual game-winning goal came in the 58th minute, as forward Jasmine Guerber's low shot found the bottom right corner to give UB the lead for good.

Thompson tallied a career-high nine saves in the win, making four stops after UB went ahead in the second half to preserve its advantage. This was the third year in a row the Bulls and Panthers have squared off, as UB avenged defeats to Pitt in the 2022 NCAA Tournament and 2023 regular season.

The Bulls will look to stay unbeaten when they return to the pitch on Thursday, as they travel to Ithaca to face Cornell.
