Pundit claims one Tottenham star is not living up to his price tag

Brennan Johnson is one of Ange Postecoglou’s most expensive signings since his arrival at Tottenham, but the winger has come under fire from former Tottenham player, Jamie O’Hara, who believes the winger was ‘miles off it’ against Leicester.

Johnson joined Tottenham last summer

Ange Postecoglou immediately recruited players that he felt would fit his style of play upon his arrival at Spurs, signing Micky Van De Ven, James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario, with Brennan Johnson being the final summer arrival.

Johnson recorded eight goals and three assists for Nottingham Forest as he shone in his boyhood club’s first season back in the Premier League for twenty-three games, earning interest from Tottenham in the summer. (TransferMarkt)

BBC Sport claim that a deal for Johnson was valued at around £45 million, with the winger signing a six-year deal. The Welsh international took a while to get going but ended the season on a respectable record of five goals and ten assists.

Jamie O’Hara has criticised Brennan Johnson

Former Tottenham midfielder, Jamie O’Hara, was less than impressed with Johnson’s performance in Spurs’ opening game draw with Leicester.

He told Grosvenor: “But yet again, it’s the same old Spurs! Someone needs to put the ball in the back of the net. Brennan Johnson, Heung-min Son, Dominic Solanke all had chances but not one had the conviction to put the ball in the back of the net.

“Spurs should’ve walked in at halftime thinking that they were Barcelona. But in the end, it was disappointing, the energy levels dropped and Leicester got back into it.

“Brennan Johnson also needs to be a lot better, Tottenham paid £50 million for him and you can let him off in the first season because he’s young, he’s an impact player. But if you’re starting in the first game of the season, you need to make an impression – he didn’t, he was miles off it!

“He doesn’t have enough end product, he never gets the cross away, on multiple occasions Maddison pinged out good balls, but Johnson’s first touch really let him down”.

Spurs Web opinion

I believe that Johnson perhaps picked up too much criticism last season, he is still very young at twenty-three and was adapting to a completely different style of play under Ange Postecoglou, with a record of fifteen goals and assists a good return.

However, the Welshman does need to step up a level this season. With the additions of Mikey Moore and Wilson Odobert to the squad there’s now plenty of competition to push Johnson on.

The winger clearly has a great cross and pace to burn, which makes him ideal for Postecoglou, but he needs confidence and better decision-making than he showed against Leicester.
