NYCFC & rain put out Woods’ fire, Revolution eliminated from Leagues Cup in Penalties
FOXBOROUGH, MA– The New England Revolution (7-2-14, 23 pts.) drew 1-1 versus New York City FC (11-5-9, 38 pts.) but were defeated 7-6 in penalties in a Leagues Cup Round of 32 matchup on Saturday.
The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium to a crowd of **allegedly** 7,267.

The team started their lineup in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Aljaž Ivačič starting in net with a backline of (left back) Peyton Miller, (center backs) Dave Romney, and Xavier Arreaga, along with (right back) Brandon Bye. The midfield spots were manned by Matt Polster (left defensive midfield) and Mark-Anthony Kaye (right defensive midfield), with Ian Harkes appeared ahead of them (central attacking midfield). The forward roles were manned by Emmanuel Boateng (left wing), Jack Panayotou (right wing), and Bobby Wood as the lone striker.
All 3 designated players for New England were out injured. (Carles Gil [leg], Giacomo Vrioni [leg]& Tomas Chancalay [torn ACL])
U22 initiative player Dylan Borrero [leg]was out injured as well.
Midfielder Esmir Bajraktarevic was unavailable due to a sprained ankle.

The match began with NYCFC starting from the center circle and electing to build out of the back to begin the match.
New England had the first chance of the match when Jack Panayotou’s long-distant left footed strike was comfortably caught by goalkeeper #49 Matt Freese.
NYCFC’s first chance came in the 15th minute when midfielder #17 Hannes Wolf’s chance went just wide of the right post.
Entering the 29th minute, New England had thought they gained the 1-0 lead after a long-distant rocket by Bobby Wood, however, Wood was offsides, and the scoreline remained 0-0.
Entering the 34th minute, NYCFC gained the 1-0 advantage.

Following a foul in the box by midfielder Matt Polster, a penalty-kick was given to NYCFC. Midfielder #10 Santi Rodriguez stepped up and panenka’d the ball down the center of the goal for the 1-0 advantage.

Defender Brandon Bye delivered a beautiful cross into the six-yard box to find forward Bobby Wood who finished a close range chance to make it 1-1.
In the 41st minute, NYCFC midfielder #10 Santiago Rodriguez was issued a yellow card.
New England almost added to their lead in the 44th minute when Bobby Wood missed potentially one of the easiest opportunities of the season and skied it over the net.
In the 45+2 minute, NYCFC midfielder #6 James Sands was issued a yellow card

The second half began with New England starting from the center circle and quickly advancing the ball into the NYCFC defensive third.
Entering the 47th minute, New England thought they were going to get a penalty kick. The referee indicated to the spot, went to VAR and reversed the decision.
NYCFC’s next chance came in the 52nd minute when a close-range chance by forward #7 Jovan Mijatović was saved by goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič.
In the 58th minute, NYCFC head coach Nick Cushing made his first two changes of the match by replacing midfielders #17 Hannes Wolf & #55 Keaton Parks with midfielders #27 Maxi Moralez and #80 Justin Haak.

Just 3 minutes later, in the 61st minute, Revolution head coach Caleb Porter made his first change by replacing Emmanuel Boateng with Tommy McNamara.
Just 4 minutes after that change, NYCFC head coach Nick Cushing made his third change by replacing forward #7 Jovan Mijatović with forward #16 Alonso Martinez.
NYCFC had yet another chance in the 66th minute when forward #16 Alonso Martínez’s effort was met with another save by goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič.

Entering the 75th minute, NYCFC midfielder #10 Santiago Rodríguez had a long-distant strike that struck the crossbar and out for a goal kick.
In the 80th minute, Revolution head coach Caleb Porter made his second change by replacing Peyton Miller with Will Sands. NYCFC head coach Nick Cushing also replaced defender #5 Birk Risa with forward #11 Julian Ferndandez.
In the 86th minute, Revolution head coach Caleb Porter made his final change of the match by replacing Bobby Wood with Malcolm Fry.
In the 90+5 minute, NYCFC midfielder #80 Justin Haak was issued a yellow card.
After the 90+6 minutes, the match concluded in a 1-1 draw. Penalties would be the decider for who advances to the Round of 16 versus Tigres.

New England midfielder Tommy McNamara took the first penalty kick for New England and slotted it into the bottom left corner to make it 1-0 to New England.
NYCFC forward #16 Alonso Martinez took the first penalty kick for NYCFC and slotted it into the middle left corner to level it 1-1.
