Heung-min Son reveals how Mourinho once upset him during a team talk

You would think that any manager would love to have Heung-min Son in their squad and would treat him impeccably, but one particular team talk from Jose Mourinho left the Tottenham man feeling pretty upset.

Mourinho was in charge of Spurs between 2019 and 2021, and despite some good football at times, and leading the club to a cup final, the Portuguese manager was sacked before he had a chance to claim the Carabao Cup.

Looking back on that tenure, Son brought up one situation where Mourinho berated him at half-time and made an example of the current Spurs skipper in front of the rest of the team.

He told EAFC (via SportBible): “One time Mourinho told me off during the game. ‘I don’t think you want to be in a game with teams like Burnley or Stoke [a rough game]’ [he told me] in front of all the players and I was so upset for it. I’m not even an 18-19 year old to be treated like that.”

But, Mourinho did speak to Son after the incident to clear the air. Son added: “Later after the match the coach texted me. [He said] ‘I know you understand that it wasn’t my intention to target and hurt you.

“‘But I need to make sure that other players are not being lazy, and I need to show them by telling off the best player in the team, and for me, that player is you.’ And after reading that text, I feel good.”

One thing that cannot be questioned is Son’s commitment to the cause. Over the last decade, he has become a Tottenham legend with his goals, creativity, and high-level performances.

The South Korean has made no secret of his love for the club, and even revealed joining Spurs was the best moment of his career (Tatler Asia).

I feel like Mourinho’s explanation of that comment he made to Son is more of a reactive excuse than the pre-meditated methods of someone trying to rally the team.

It’s a really strange way to motivate people by criticising the best player and a nice person like that.
