Spurs star says he is ready take on more leadership responsibilities this year

Guglielmo Vicario says he is ready to take on more responsibilities in his second season at Tottenham and help the younger players in the squad cope with the challenges they face.

Vicario has been a hit at Tottenham

Right from the second he stepped foot on the pitch last summer, it was clear that Vicario was a natural leader, with the Italian being extremely vocal between the sticks, constantly bellowing encouragement and instruction to his teammates.

The biggest compliment one can pay to the former Empoli man is that Spurs have not felt the loss of Hugo Lloris’ leadership, with the 27-year-old naturally taking the place of Tottenham’s former captain.

The new Spurs number one says he is ready to take on even more responsibility now that he has settled in well at the club.

Vicario is ready for Spurs responsibility

He told Football.London: “Yeah, I’m getting older. I’m one of the oldest players of this group. It’s just my second season, but I feel like I have more responsibilities than last season.

“It has to be like this. I would like to take that. It’s a big honour for me also to have this opportunity to be with and to speak more with the young players.

“So I’m very, very happy with that new role inside the dressing room, but I have always to do that in a humble way and to try to just give them good advice so that they are in a great mind for the team.

“We have a lot of young players who are very talented and we just have to work and follow the the instructions of the gaffer. We all have the same thoughts and the same mindset.

“So yeah, now we are putting some fuel in our legs during this period. It’s very important as there are very big games ahead. So, we’re trying to find our best for the beginning of the Premier League.”

Vicario was with the Italy squad at the Euros this summer and although he did not get to play, the Tottenham man admitted that he enjoyed being part of the group in Germany.

He said about the Euros: “As a human being it was a very, very good experience and it was my first big tournament with my national team.

“I was very proud of that. Of course, the outcome was not great and we know that. We’ll take responsibility and go again in the September games.”

One man who did impress at the Euros was Radu Dragusin and Vicario is hopeful that the Romanian will bring that confidence into the new season with Tottenham.

When asked about the 22-year-old, the goalkeeper said: “Radu is a great player, of course, and also he’s a great human being. He’s a hard worker. He did very well for Romania and so I’m very happy for him.

“They had a big, big tournament, of course, they were not among the favourites, but they won the group and they had a tough game against the Netherlands. So for him, it has been a good window and now he is back with us and we are ready all together to try to do our best in the new season.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Vicario is evidently a natural leader and has a fantastic attitude. Every dressing room needs voices like him to ensure that the young players remain professional and keep their eye on the ball.
