Report: Bad news for Spurs in the race for Ivan Toney after latest development

The Times have now claimed that Ivan Toney is expected to remain at Brentford for one more year after it became clear that striker Igor Thiago will be sidelined for several months.

Thiago injury could keep Toney at Brentford

Thiago, who arrived at Brentford from Club Brugge for a club-record fee earlier this summer, is expected to be the man to fill the shoes of Toney, who is now into the final year of his contract at the Gtech Community Stadium.

However, it emerged last week that the Brazilian had suffered a knee injury, which is expected to keep him out of the start of the season (The Athletic).

On Wednesday, Fabrizio Romano revealed that the 23-year-old’s injury was much more serious than initially thought and that he would be sidelined until the end of the year after having an operation on his meniscus.

Toney transfer is now in doubt

The Times have now also confirmed that Thiago is expected to be on the treatment table for most of 2024.

The report says that Brentford’s plans regarding Toney are thus expected to change with the striker now looking ‘increasingly likely’ to remain at the Gtech Community Stadium.

It is explained that while the England international was keen to leave the club amidst interest from the likes of Spurs, he could now see out the year left on his contract and depart on a free transfer next summer.

At the very least, Brentford’s asking price for Toney would have gone up significantly after Thiago’s injury, which is why Tottenham might now be forced to abandon their pursuit of the 28-year-old.

It remains to be seen whether the Lilywhites will still attempt a late bid for the striker.
