Report: Tottenham contract extension claims appear to be wide of the mark

Multiple journalists now indicate that reports of a Tottenham contract extension may be wide of the mark after the club themselves failed to mention it during a recent announcement.

Bryan Gil joins Girona on loan

Tottenham confirmed today that Bryan Gil has joined Girona on loan for the 2024/25 season, in a short announcement totalling just 45 words.

The announcement did not include any mention of a contract extension, release clause, option to buy, or obligation to buy, despite previous reports over the past week.

In Fabrizio Romano’s ‘here we go’ post about the deal, he claimed that Bryan Gil was set to extend his Tottenham contract by an extra year to facilitate the loan deal.

The new contract would include a €15m release clause, which Girona would have priority over, or could eventually be triggered by other clubs.

This appeared to be a move by Spurs to protect Gil’s transfer value, while still allowing him to leave the club on loan in search of regular first-team minutes – a win-win situation.

No mention of a contract extension for Bryan Gil

However, since Tottenham’s announcement failed to mention any of these details, other journalists have taken to social media to comment on the situation.

George Sessions stated: ‘No contract extension, however, despite recent reports.’

Alasdair Gold also commented: ‘Looks like just a straight loan for Bryan Gil to Girona. No suggestion of options, obligations or any contract extension.’

Spurs Web Opinion:

Hopefully, this story changes again and Tottenham announce the contract extension, because the loan makes little sense without it.

Bryan Gil needs to leave permanently and I don’t see what Spurs would get from yet another season-long loan back to Spain without an obligation or realistic option to buy.
