Alex Cora Rejects Theory After Signing New Red Sox Contract

Alex Cora went against the grain when the Red Sox embarked on the 2024 Major League Baseball season.

It’s pretty uncommon for big league managers to enter a campaign on an expiring contract, but that’s the path Cora chose ahead of his sixth season at the helm in Boston. The skipper in March also said he wasn’t expecting extension talks to occur amid the season, which led many to believe Cora was setting the stage for an exit.

But on Wednesday, the Red Sox shocked the baseball world when they finalized a three-year extension for Cora. After signing on the dotted line, the 48-year-old revealed the delay in negotiations wasn’t out of a desire to keep his career options open.

“I promise you, this decision was more based on the comfort of my family than my professional career,” Cora told reporters, per ESPN.

Security for his family was one of the priorities Cora presented to the Red Sox before the sides struck their deal. The former infielder also wants to win, and he evidently received a commitment to that objective from Boston’s brass.

Now that he no longer has to think about his future, Cora can fixate his focus on trying to lead the Red Sox into the postseason. Boston endured a setback in that mission coming out of the All-Star break, but it will try to get back on track starting Friday night when it opens a three-game home set with the New York Yankees.
