Underlying reason could prevent Spurs midfielder’s exit this summer despite plenty of interest

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with plenty of incoming already in the current transfer window, however, one issue at the club could have a factor on some of their business in the market.

An Oliver Skipp exit looks to be difficult

Tottenham will have to name a 25-man squad to the Premier League for next season. Within that, clubs cannot register more than 17 non-homegrown players on the list and the remainder of the squad, up to a total of 25, must be considered to be homegrown.

With Tottenham having qualified for the Europa League as a result of their fifth-place finish, this is where the situation becomes slightly more complicated since the North Londoners need four club-trained players in their squad.

Oliver Skipp is the only established club-trained player left within the first team, following the exits of Japhet Tanganga and Troy Parrott along with last summer’s departures of Harry Winks and Harry Kane.

Skipp’s homegrown status may mean he remains with Spurs

Goalkeepers Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman both qualify for the status and will likely have to bring at last one up from the U21s list to fill the gap.

Sky Sports are reporting that Skipp is attracting interest from a number of clubs, including Premier League newcomers Leicester City, however, he is unlikely to leave due to the situation which Tottenham find themselves in.

Skipp started just five games under Ange Postecoglou last season, with the likes of Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Pape Matar Sarr ahead of him in the midfield pecking order.

Many hoped that Skipp would have kicked on following his successful loan spell at Norwich City a couple of years back, but has been unable to make an impact to hold down a regular first-team place.

There’s no questioning his stamina, however, he does not have an out and out strength to his game and seems to have fallen into some of the same habits which Harry Winks did during his latter stages in N17 of just passing the ball sideways.
