Report: Ange Postecoglou used Spurs player in a completely new role this week

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed that Jamie Donley played in Tottenham’s backline in their behind-closed-doors friendly against Cambridge United on Saturday.

Tottenham emerged 7-2 winners in the game, which took place at Hotspur Way, with Brennan Johnson netting a hat-trick and Son Heung-min scoring twice.

Ange Postecoglou is currently without a few of his first-choice defenders, with Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin yet to arrive for pre-season.

The Tottenham head coach does have Destiny Udogie at his disposal but Gold has revealed that he experimented with Donley at left-back for part of the encounter.

The journalist stated that the attacking midfielder did a ‘fine job’ in the role despite having never played that position before.

Donley will hope to catch the eye of Postecoglou and the coaching staff in pre-season and stake a claim for a first-team spot.

However, the 19-year-old is thought to be a wanted man across the EFL, with the likes of Oxford United, Luton Town Birmingham City, Briston City and Bristol Rovers thought to have expressed an interest in signing the teenager on loan (Football.London).

We should not read too much into Ange’s decision to use Donley at left-back.

With Ben Davies having to play in central defence, the Australian might have not had any other option to split the minutes with Udogie.
