Serie A club president opens up on new bid for Man Utd ace linked with a move to Ligue 1 - report

Lazio president Claudio Lotito has revealed that the Serie A side have tabled a new bid to sign Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood.

The 22-year-old forward is the subject of a bidding war between Lazio and Olympique Marseille, although he’s closer to joining the Ligue 1 side.

Greenwood has one year left on his contract at Old Trafford and is expected to leave the club this summer.

His exit will give United more leeway in the transfer market, with the club still wary of breaching the Premier League’s Profit & Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Lazio president Lotito has now confirmed that the Italian side have tabled a new bid worth around £21 million to sign Greenwood and acknowledged that there are other clubs also interested in the striker.

“I offered €25m (£21m) plus 50% of the resale, plus bonuses and commissions,” Lotito said (via Sos Fanta). “Yet several companies have slipped in to do a disruptive action.

“After Juventus, Napoli, it seems that everyone is jinxing it, they are terrified that we can take him, and they want to ruin everything.”

While Lazio continues to push for Greenwood’s signature, United have already accepted a £26.7m fee from Olympique Marseille for the England international.

New Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi is keen to add Greenwood to his attacking ranks, especially with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang linked with a move away from the Ligue 1 club this summer.

The agreement includes a sell-on clause, allowing United to profit if the French club sells Greenwood in the future. However, the deal has hit a significant roadblock due to strong opposition from Marseille fans.

Greenwood’s previous domestic abuse case has reportedly ignited controversy among the Marseille supporters even though the charges against the player have been dropped.

A petition calling for the club to abandon the deal has gained traction, putting immense pressure on the French club’s hierarchy.

Greenwood has yet to agree personal terms with Marseille, and if the move falls through, Lazio could leverage the situation to negotiate a lower fee for the striker.
