A New Chapter for Ed Francis at Exeter City

0 3

City’s newest recruit, Ed Francis, has made the leap from National League side Gateshead to League One Exeter City. 24-year-old Ed signed a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee, the contract has an option for a third year. The sandy shores of Exmouth beach provided the backdrop for our exclusive interview with the talented defender, where he shared his excitement about the upcoming season and what he brings to the Grecians.

A Journey of Experience

Ed Francis boasts an impressive footballing journey at a young age. Having captained the Manchester City academy in an FA Youth Cup Final, won promotion with Notts County, and clinched the FA Trophy with Gateshead last season, he brings a wealth of experience to St James Park. Notably, he has also tested his skills abroad, playing in the Netherlands (for Almere City) and Switzerland (Grasshopper Club Zurich). He’s also played one game for England C in March this year.

The Grecian Connection

What drew Ed to Exeter City? It was more than just the beautiful Devon coastline. In an honest conversation with Gary Caldwell, Ed discovered the heart of the club—a fan-owned institution with a strong connection to its supporters. This resonated with him, as he had experienced a similar bond during his time at Gateshead. The Grecians’ style of play and the manager’s vision aligned perfectly with his own aspirations.

Overcoming Challenges

Ed’s journey hasn’t been without hurdles. Last season, he suffered a fractured skull during a match against York City. The injury sidelined him for three weeks, but thankfully, there were no lasting effects. Ed’s resilience and determination allowed him to return swiftly, proving that setbacks are mere stepping stones on the path to success.

An “Old Soul”

Ed Francis is more than just a footballer; he’s a mentor and a confidant. His vice-captaincy role at Gateshead demonstrated leadership beyond his years. Team mates look up to him, and he’s always ready to lend an ear. As he puts it, “Everyone says I’m a bit of an old soul!”
