Report: Tottenham ‘mulling over’ a move for £45m defender – Man Utd also linked

Rumours suggest that Spurs remain in the market for a centre-back but will have to fight off rival bidders: Manchester United, Newcastle and West Ham if they want to sign Max Kilman.

Spurs have been linked with Max Kilman

Despite the signing of Romanian international Radu Dragusin in January, it’s reported that Tottenham still firmly have their eye on several potential central defensive signings with Tutto Mercato reporting that Bologna defender, Calafori, who has shone at the EUROs, is of ‘interest’ to Tottenham.

Another central defensive signing could cause further problems however with current third-choice centre-back, Radu Dragusin, agent, who is notoriously outspoken, warning in May ‘if he doesn’t play, we’ll have to think of other solutions’ going on to say, ‘let’s hope not, but you never know’ (Mirror).

Nonetheless, reports continue to link Tottenham with a £45 million rated Premier League centre-back, perhaps to ensure competition for both Romero and Van De Ven.

However, Spurs may have to brace themselves for a fight over the player’s signature with the defender being one of Manchester United’s ‘priorities’ as they seek to replace the exiting Varane (Mirror).

Wolves ‘hold out’ for £45 million for Max Kilman

Tottenham’s interest in the 27-year-old Wolves defender was first revealed a year ago with Tutto Mercato reporting that Spurs were making the most ‘dense contacts’ around the player.

GiveMeSport have suggested the club are still very much interested with Kilman ‘believed to be one of the names that has worked his way onto Postecoglou’s radar’.

TalkSport’s Darren Ambrose has circled the player as one Spurs should go for as well, suggesting that although it sounds ‘crazy’, the price tag for Kilman is actually ‘not bad’.

The former Crystal Palace midfielder went on to explain ‘I’d take him at Spurs’, jokingly suggesting however that ‘Levy would probably offer £2 million and a bag of crisps or something’ (TBR Football).

Ambrose’s former team, Newcastle United, are one of the clubs who’ve seen their bid for Kilman rebutted by the Wolves with more transfer fee being valued above The Magpies’ proposed deal of academy product, Elliot Anderson, plus a fee.

West Ham are the other club who’ve seen a bid turned down with their reported £25 million offer deemed not enough for Kilman (Telegraph).

Other clubs failed attempts at Kilman offer Tottenham an idea of how much Wolves will expect to let their centre-back leave; it should however be no surprise that Gary O’Neil’s side feel they can charge a premium with Kilman being homegrown and left-footed.

Spurs Web Opinion:

Kilman is a player with Premier League experience for a number of years now, and it wouldn’t come as a surprise if Tottenham moved for him as they’ve looked to purchase from lower-level Premier League clubs before, signing Bissouma, Hojbjerg and Johnson most recently.

However, the price being quoted is high and although Kilman is left-footed and homegrown, it’s plausible that Tottenham could find a better deal elsewhere with other clubs’ interest driving up the Wolves defender’s price.

There are certainly areas of the pitch that Spurs should be prioritising more this summer than central defence and having four, recently signed and expensive central defenders could spell trouble; it may be a better move to promote an academy player such as Ashley Phillips who shone on loan at Plymouth last season
