Report says Spurs are working on a deal for midfielder, despite some sources disagreeing

Football Insider report that Tottenham are working on a deal to sign Weston McKennie from Juventus this summer, and may have just been handed a boost in their pursuit.

Tottenham linked with Weston McKennie again

Reports linking Spurs with a summer move for McKennie first surfaced last week when Football Insider claimed the Lilywhites were attempting to hijack Aston Villa’s transfer attempts.

It was said that Tottenham had bid £15m for the American star’s services, an offer which was swiftly accepted by Juventus in a major blow to Villa who are trying to replace Douglas Luiz in their midfield.

However, FootballLondon’s Alasdair Gold was quick to pour cold water on the rumours, revealing that he had heard nothing to suggest McKennie was on his way to Spurs.

Gold tweeted: “It is my day off, but no interest from Spurs in Weston McKennie I’m told.”

Aston Villa priced out of a move for McKennie

Football Insider have expanded on their report this week, now stating that McKennie has priced himself out of a move to Villa this summer – presumably because his wages are too high.

This comes after Villa just agreed the transfer of Douglas Luiz to Juventus, with Enzo Barrenechea and Samuel Iling-Junior moving the other way (BBC).

Spurs are reportedly now in talks to sign the midfielder, but will be joined by multiple Premier League rivals after McKennie impressed for Juventus in Serie A last season.

If Alasdair Gold says there is nothing happening, there is nothing happening.

Judging by McKennie’s Premier League audition with Leeds United, I also wouldn’t want to see him come in as Tottenham’s big name reinforcement this summer.
