Fabrizio Romano explains why Spurs and Liverpool might not be able to sign 24-year-old

Fabrizio Romano has said that Atalanta might not be willing to let rumoured Tottenham target Ederson leave this summer as they are already expected to lose another key player.

Over the past couple of months, several outlets have named Ederson as one of the top defensive midfield options on Tottenham’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window.

This includes an update from The Daily Mirror on 23 May, which claimed last week that Spurs’ pursuit of the 24-year-old has got a lot harder after Atalanta won the Europa League.

It was explained that the Serie A club would receive a financial boost after qualifying for the Champions League, thus meaning that they are less desperate to sell their main assets.

A couple of weeks ago, TuttoJuve, stated that Atalanta had told Tottenham and the other clubs interested in the midfielder that he would cost at least €40m (£34m).

The report stated that Juventus and Newcastle United had also reached out over a deal for the Brazilian while over the last few days there have been suggestions that Liverpool have made an opening offer for the player (Jorge Nicola).

However, Romano has now dismissed those claims, asserting that Atalanta have not received any proposals and explaining that the club would not want to leave Ederson since they are already expected to lose Teun Koopmeiners this summer.

The journalist told CaughtOffside: “We heard reports of a bid from Liverpool for Ederson, but what I’m hearing at the moment is that Atalanta have not received anything official. They know that there is interest but they absolutely want to keep the player at the club.

Why? Because there’s potential for Atalanta to sell Teun Koopmeiners, with Juventus leading the race for the Dutch midfielder. They have already advanced on personal terms with Koopmeiners, and the idea of Atalanta is to sell just one player.”

The speculation linking Ederson with a move to Tottenham appears to have died down a little over the last few weeks. That might suggest that the North London club are turning their attention to other alternatives as they are not optimistic that a deal can be agreed.
