Opinion: Pochettino’s Chelsea exit could mean good news for Spurs transfer

With Mauricio Pochettino walking away from Chelsea this week, the football world has been shocked, but Tottenham Hotspur may well be looking at this situation as a great opportunity to get what they want in the transfer market.

After a difficult first season at Chelsea, Pochettino finally appeared to be turning a corner and had got the Blues playing some good football. With five straight wins at the end of the season, Chelsea had even climbed to sixth place in the league and secured European football for next year.

Then, this week, it was announced that Pochettino and Chelsea had parted ways by mutual consent. The Argentine will once again be looking for his next project, and the London club are looking for yet another manager.

Still, with the club now in further disarray, those on the outside may be looking at Chelsea and licking their lips when it comes to potential transfer targets. Indeed, the players’ reactions in the wake of Pochettino’s exit has been rather telling, and some may be more keen than ever to jump ship.

This could spell good news for Tottenham in particular, as they look set to continue their pursuit of Conor Gallagher this summer.

In the past, it seemed Pochettino had been the last bastion standing between the Chelsea owners’ desire to sell the academy graduate for pure profit to help ease the financial issues at the club.

Gallagher has still not been offered a new contract and is heading into the final year of his current deal with his boyhood club, and it is thought Spurs are leading the race to snap him up this summer (Football Insider).

With Pochettino gone, and a new manager set to come in and try to put their own stamp on the squad, the door for Gallagher’s exit is now open wider than ever before. Surely, even he is looking at this situation and realising it’s time to move on.
