Report: Spurs could earn huge figures for every future Champions League matchday

Football Finance expert Kieran Maguire believes that Tottenham Hotspur will miss out on a significant amount of funds after missing out on the Champions League as they would have generated huge funds in matchday revenue alone, given the expanded format of the competition.

In the end, Ange Postecoglou’s men fell short in their quest to finish fourth as they had a poor end to the campaign, with Aston Villa deservedly pipping them to a top-four finish.

Some Spurs fans will not be too disappointed at missing out on Champions League football as the team is perhaps not ready to compete to win Europe’s premier club tournament.

That is a view shared by Postecoglou himself, who said earlier this month that the Lilywhites “are not a Champions League club” at the moment, insisting that they have “work to do” to close the gap with the best sides in the world (Yahoo Sport).

However, Maguire pointed out that given the new format of the Champions League from next season, teams are guaranteed to play at least four home matches.

Tottenham could earn £5m per Champions League match

He suggested that given the revenue-earning potential of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the North London side would have generated over £20m in matchday income alone, which is why those at the club would be ‘frustrated’ by their inability to qualify.

Maguire told Football Insider: “Spurs will be very frustrated at not finishing in the top four and qualifying for the Champions League. With the stadium in its current state, they would have generated £5 million per match with the club able to charge full prices for home fixtures.

“On top of that, they would have had the prize money available in the Champions League and Uefa are very bullish about the level of commercial sponsorship available. Having said that, Tottenham will still do reasonably well on a Thursday night – there are some spectacular teams who do play in the Europa League.”

Spurs Web Opinion

As Maguire points out, Spurs tend to sell out even for Europa League matches and there is no doubt that the club would earn a decent amount in matchday revenue should we go far in the competition, even though the prize money from the competition pales in comparison to the Champions League.
