Ange Postecoglou explains why Spurs pair did not travel to Australia

0 2

Speaking to the press ahead of his side’s post-season friendly against Newcastle United, Ange Postecoglou has revealed the reason Cristian Romero and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg did not travel to Melbourne with the rest of the Tottenham Hotspur squad.

Just hours after securing a 3-0 win over Sheffield United on the final day of the season and confirming their place in the Europa League for next season, the Tottenham squad made the long trip over to Australia.

Much has been said about the club’s plans to play a friendly against Newcastle just days after the final game of the Premier League campaign, especially given the risk of exhaustion that comes with the journey to the other side of the world.

But, with Ange Postecoglou back in his native Australia, the chance for expanding the Spurs fanbase and connecting with another part of the world has been deemed worthwhile.

Romero and Hojbjerg’s absence explained

In his press conference (via Football.London) ahead of the game against Newcastle, Postecoglou has revealed why both Romero and Hojbjerg have not travelled with the rest of the squad.

He said: “Cuti for personal reasons, he’s got to fly back to Argentina. So we kind of knew that, some personal reasons.

“Pierre had an injury going into the last game and was kind of touch and go and after the game pulled up sore. Again because we were getting straight on a flight, it just didn’t make any sense to bring guys like that along.

“Everyone else got through it unscathed from the weekend so we’ll have a full compliment from the squad we took away and some young players as well and we’ll, if we can, get them some game time.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Hopefully, the personal issue for Romero is nothing too serious, and the same goes for Hojbjerg’s injury, too.

The former, in particular, has had a long season and could do with the rest anyway — but so could a lot of players, I’m sure. It will be interesting to see how many first team regulars actually play the game, or a substantial part of it.
