Man Utd need to reward £230k per week star with new contract to end transfer talk - View

Manchester United should hand a new long-term contract to captain Bruno Fernandes amid the recent speculation over his future at the club.

The Portugal international has been a mainstay in the starting line-up for the Red Devils since his arrival from Sporting Lisbon during the 2020 January transfer window.

Fernandes has shown exceptional fitness levels with just two games missed through injury. He has not been at his best this season, but has still been the club’s best performer.

The 29-year-old recently bagged the man of the match award in the 3-2 win over Newcastle United where he registered his 12th assist of the campaign for Rasmus Hojlund’s goal.

Aside from his assists, Fernandes has 15 goals to his name this season. His 27 goal contributions stand him apart with Hojlund being the next best player (17 goal involvements).

With such consistency, the club may need to open talks over a new deal soon. Fernandes’ current contract expires in June 2026 but there is an option to extend for another year.

The midfielder is reportedly unhappy with his current £230,000-a-week wages being less than Marcus Rashford’s. The latter signed a new contract last year worth £300,000 per week.

In our view, the Portuguese deserves parity with last season’s top scorer for United. Unlike Rashford, Fernandes has been consistent with his goal contributions in every campaign.

We believe Fernandes is still in the prime of his career and could be a key player for United for the next three to four seasons, provided they match his ambitions on the pitch to keep him.
