Report: Tottenham Hotspur set for crucial VAR vote next month

Premier League clubs will vote on the future of VAR technology next month, after Wolverhampton Wanderers officially proposed the initiative be removed from the Premier League. Here are all the details of when the vote takes place and how things are shaping up.

VAR was introduced to the Premier League in 2019, with the intention of removing — or at the very least reducing — the amount of clear and obvious errors in the game.

Whether that has happened or not is highly debatable, but what the game does now have is lengthy delays, uneasy goal celebrations, and intensely controversial decisions week in, week out.

Indeed, despite detailed video reviews, mistakes are still made, leaving fans and clubs very unhappy, with the margin between victory and defeat still being determined by those lines they mark up in the VAR room.

Spurs have been on the positive end of those errors this season, when a Luis Diaz goal was wrongly ruled out for offside as the Lilywhites went on to secure a 2-1 win against Liverpool. But, plenty of calls have gone against Ange Postecoglou‘s side too.

Is VAR on its way out?

Wolves clearly feel the most aggrieved about the way VAR operates, and this week lodged a formal complaint and triggered a vote to remove the technology from the Premier League from next season on the basis that it has led to an “erosion of trust” in the sport (Guardian).

We now know, courtesy of Football.London, that the big vote will take place on June 6 at the next AGM meeting of Premier League clubs. Luton, Burnley, and Sheffield United will not get a vote, with their place taken by the three newly-promoted clubs.

At least 14 clubs must be in agreement for VAR to be scrapped.

Spurs Web Opinion

Get rid of it. There are just as many mistakes as before, but now it’s far more frustrating and takes twice as long anyway. I can’t stand what VAR has done to the game, and I desperately hope enough clubs vote to scrap it.
