Micah Richards explains why he thinks Spurs are better without Harry Kane at times

Micah Richards has said that Tottenham are now a better side after selling Harry Kane, opining that part of the reason for that is due to the pacy and energy they now have upfront.

It is fair to say that not a lot of pundits gave Spurs a chance of finishing in the top six this season after Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich last summer, with the likes of Paul Merson suggesting that the Lilywhites would even struggle to finish in the top half of the table without their record goalscorer (Sky Sports).

However, Spurs have not had an issue scoring goals despite the 30-year-old’s departure, with many of their attacking players stepping up and making up for Kane’s loss.

Spurs can play with more pace without Harry Kane

Tottenham are certain to finish higher than they did last season and look set to qualify for the Europa League, with Richards seeing that as evidence that they have improved since losing their talisman to Bayern last summer.

When Gary Linkener asked in The Rest is Football Podcast: “On the subject of Spurs, do you still think they are a better side without Harry Kane?.”

Richards responded: “Let me spin the question to you, Gary. Where did Spurs finish last season? (Lineker responded eighth). So, if they finish better than eighth this season that would mean, it’s been great for Harry Kane. Top-scorer in the Bundesliga and it’s been great for Spurs, because they are no worse off.

Lineker then claimed: “Yeah, but you never know, they might have gone on to win the league if Harry Kane stayed,” which led to Richards laughing out loud and adding: “We don’t know that. What did Gino D’Acampo say, ‘If my nan had wheels, she would be a bicycle’. It’s a ridiculous thing to say, Gary. Tottenham have performed better, at times, without Harry Kane because they can play with pace.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is sad to see that this is the level of discourse that passes off as football punditry. It does not take a genius to figure out that Tottenham are a better side this season despite the loss of Kane not because of it.

We now have a different manager in charge and also have many new players including Vicario, Udogie, Van de Ven, Sarr and others. Spurs would obviously be a much stronger team if Kane was leading the line for them right now.
