Report: Spurs are battling three other PL clubs to sign West Ham defender

HITC reveal that Tottenham Hotspur face competition from a host of clubs in the Premier League for West Ham United full-back Ben Johnson.

Johnson’s current deal at the London Stadium runs out this June and the chances of him leaving his boyhood club on a free transfer has been talked up recently.

Last month, Football Transfers explained that the 24-year-old, who can operate at right-back or left-back, is rated quite highly by Ledley King, and that Spurs are plotting a move for him.

Competition intensifies for Ben Johnson

HITC have now also backed up Tottenham’s interest in Johnson but they make it clear that the Lilywhites will not have a free run at the player.

Given the Hammers star’s versatility, homegrown status and the fact that he is available on a free, he is expected to be highly sought after, with Aston Villa, Wolves and Everton thought to have expressed an interest already.

Additionally, the publication adds that clubs in Italy, France and Germany have already talked to Johnson’s representatives too.

Spurs Web Opinion

One can understand why Tottenham are interested in Johnson as he would be able to cover for both full-back areas and the fact that he is homegrown would also give the club some leeway in naming a squad for Europe.

However, the 24-year-old might want to move to a club where he is guaranteed to get regular game time, which would not be the case at Spurs.
