Ivan Perisic return raises questions over Tottenham’s transfer decision

Ivan Perisic made his third substitute appearance off the bench for Hajduk Split last weekend, thus raising questions over whether Tottenham made the right decision by letting him go.

Perisic had a promising start to the season, impacting matches regularly as a substitute for Ange Postecoglou’s men before he picked up an ACL injury back in September.

It was thought at the time that the experienced wide-man was unlikely to kick a ball again this season and was in a race against time to return before the Euros.

Ivan Perisic may have left Tottenham too early

With the 35-year-old contracted to Spurs only until the end of the season, the Lilywhites made the decision to allow him to move to his boyhood club Hajduk Split on loan in January, with the player agreeing to sign for the club permanently this summer.

However, Perisic has made a much quicker recovery than previously expected, having featured as a substitute in Hajduk’s last three matches.

In fact, the on-loan Spurs man played almost half an hour from the bench on Sunday in the 3-0 win over HNK Gorica, thus perhaps raising question marks over the North London club’s decision to let him leave.

One can argue that having a player of Perisic’s quality available for the final six or seven matches would have helped Postecoglou, particularly given Tottenham’s recent struggles.

However, at the same time, if the 35-year-old had decided that he wanted to leave in order to give himself the best chance of going to the Euros match fit, I can understand why Spurs gave the player what he wanted.
