Bishop’s Stortford 0-2 King’s Lynn Town Match Report

19/3/24

Vanarama National League North

Hamish Arnold

King’s Lynn boosted their fight for Vanarama National League North survival with a 0-2 win at already relegated Bishop’s Stortford on Tuesday. It was the Blues 15th League defeat in a row, and remain pointless in 2024.

Ryan Charles was called into defensive action to head clear from a left wing corner early on, the second cross was headed behind for another corner kick, which Lordon Akolbire defended. Aaron Greene pounced on  a defensive error and broke through the Linnets defence on the left side of the box, but Paul Jones saved with his legs to keep the ball out. The visitors broke quickly from a Stortford corner but Fraser Alexander denied Tom Hughes’ through ball to Jonathan Margetts across the 18 yard line and conceded a throw-in with the block. Ross Barrows’ right wing cross was too high for the two in the middle and Akolbire picked up possession, but King’s Lynn won a corner soon after, where Margetts turned home at the near post with a neat side-foot finish. Charles’ low shot from outside the box was saved by Jones, and a deep free kick was headed clear from the left side of the box, where Cameron Hargreaves’ looping volley went wide. A Linnets free kick on the 18 yard line was blocked by Amadou Kassarate in the wall, before Owen Devonport headed wide from 15 yards from a left wing cross. Jones was on hand to save Charles’ half-volley shot from 25 yards in the last action of the first half.

HT 0-1

Greene volleyed wide from substitute Darren Foxley’s left wing corner, before Barrows’ effort was caught high by Jack Giddens on the six yard line. Akolbire went close with a low shot, running onto a through ball he fired against the base of the right post with Jones beaten. Hughes took on a shot early, he fired over the bar from 20 yards on the turn. A King’s Lynn clearance went down the line as far as Foxley on the Stortford left wing, he dribbled into the box but Jones saved his low shot. A chipped free kick from a central position was headed wide by an unmarked Margettsm before Coulson headed a left wing free kick into Giddens’ arms. Burrows’ central free kick went high of the target before in second half injury time, two Linnets substitutes combined with Bartosz Cybulski controlling the ball on his cheat from a left wing cross for Ben Stephens to volley into the back of the net.
