According to a report in Fotboll Direkt (as translated by Sport Witness), Tottenham decided to increase their salary offer to Lucas Bergvall to convince him to join, with the midfielder now expected to earn around £28k per week at the North London side.
It has widely been reported in Spain over the past few days that the bigger financial package offered by Tottenham was one of the main reasons why the Premier League side were able to beat Barcelona to Bergvall (Sport).
Barca president Johan Laporte even publicly asserted last week that the 18-year-old’s decision was purely down to finances (The Athletic).
However, this claim was rubbished by Djurgarden’s sports coordinator Peter Kisfaludy, who told Football.London a couple of days ago that the youngster just had a better feeling about the Tottenham project.
How much Tottenham will pay Lucas Bergvall
While only Bergvall might know his true motivations, Fotboll Direkt have now confirmed that Ange Postecoglou’s men did have to increase the value of the contract they offered the teenager to seal the transfer.
The outlet explains that the Lilywhites initially offered 15m Swedish Krona per year (£1.1m), which works out to around £21k per week but then decided to increase their offer to 18m Swedish Krona (£1.3m), which is worth around £25k per week.
In fact, it is suggested that, with the various bonuses included in the midfielder’s contract, he could even earn around 20m Swedish Krona (£1.5m), which will take his weekly salary up to £28k.
Spurs Web Opinion
While £28k per week is quite high for a teenager who is still unproven at the highest level, it is still considerably lower than what the majority of the first-team players earn at Tottenham and would hardly make a dent in the club’s wage bill.
