Scarborough Athletic 5-0 Bishop’s Stortford Match Report 25/11/23

Vanarama National League North

Hamish Arnold

Scarborough Athletic inflicted a 5-0 defeat over Bishop’s Stortford in the Vanarama National League on Saturday. After a win and a draw from the last two games, Steve Smith would have been hoping to continue that unbeaten run, but instead saw his side suffer the joint-biggest defeat of the season.

Gio McGregor’s free kick narrowly missed the target for the Blues from 25 yards, and Jack Giddens kept out Lewis Maloney’s strike with a diving save. From the resulting corner, Aidan Rutledge headed home from inside the six yard box inside 10 minutes. Finlay Barnes thought he had doubled the lead but he was offside from Kieran Weledji’s through ball. Darren Foxley saw his curling shot blocked for a throw-in, before Rutledge’s shot from a tight angle was deflected wide for a corner. Giddens made two great reaction saves from the corner kick but couldn’t keep out the third attempt as Weledji found the bottom corner. Manny Adebowale’s long throw from the right wasn’t dealt with and McGregor got a shot away at the far post but fired wide. Stortford gave the ball away in the centre circle and Rutledge received a through ball to the left side of the box, his cut back found Barnes in the middle of the box who rifled the ball into the top left corner.

HT 3-0

Harry Beadle blocked a volley by Barnes, and the away side cleared the following corner, but conceded when Luca Collie fired in a low shot across goal into the bottom right corner from the left side of the box. Tosin Olufemi cleared a low cross from the right, and Weledji fired wide from the edge of the area. Harry Green forced Giddens into a low save to his left, and Purver volleyed wide from the edge of the box from a Stortford header. Substitute Osman Sow wanted a penalty as he appeared to be pulled down while chasing Giddens’ long pass, but referee Oliver Mackey waved away the appeals. Ollie Peters’ corner was headed wide by Ryan Charles, before Green found the bottom right corner with a powerful strike in the 90th minute to seal an emphatic result.
