‘I was hearing’ – Alasdair Gold sheds light on Conte’s state of mind at Spurs

0 3

Alasdair Gold has said that Antonio Conte was pleased with the progress Tottenham are making and suggested that the mid-season break would give the Italian some clarity to finalise the club’s January transfer targets.

Despite Tottenham’s results sliding in the final month and a half before the World Cup, overall, the club has made plenty of progress in the 12 months since Conte took over from Nuno Espirito Santo.

The 53-year-old’s future has been the subject of speculation over recent months, with reports from Italy indicating that he could return to Juventus at the end of the season (28/10/22 Gazzetta via Sport Witness).

However, The Athletic claimed last month that Spurs are expected to hold talks over a new deal with Conte during the World Cup break and asserted that the Lilywhite hierarchy remains ‘confident’ the former Inter Milan boss will commit his future to the club.

Meanwhile, The Evening Standard revealed a few weeks ago that the North London club are prepared to back their head coach during the January transfer window, just as they did during the summer.

Gold has remarked that Conte was in a positive frame of mind before the break and suggested that the time off may have helped the Italian to clear his head.

The journalist said on his YouTube channel: “From everything I was hearing behind the scenes before they had this break, he was in a good place, he was a happy chap.

“Maybe he’s been able to take a step back from the things that were maybe perhaps frustrating him about Spurs this season, and also reinforce his thinking about things he wants in the January window and the second half of the season.”

There is no doubt that everyone at Spurs, including the coaching staff and the players, needed the break as they seemed to be burnt out in the final few weeks of the season, given that they were involved in high-pressure games almost every three days.

I expect us to be much more consistent when the campaign resumes, particularly if we address a couple of weaknesses during the January transfer window.
