Former PL referee reveals whether Romero should have seen red against Chelsea
Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher believes Cristian Romero should have been given his marching orders for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair.
In the lead-up to the corner kick from which Harry Kane eventually scored Tottenham’s stoppage-time equaliser, replays showed that Romero pulled Cucurella to the ground by his hair.
Thomas Tuchel was extremely critical of the decision in his post-match press conference, insisting that Romero should have been sent off and that Spurs’ equaliser should not have stood (Hayters TV).
Gallagher has now told Sky Sports that he can understand why Anthony Taylor did not blow the whistle as he might have not seen the full incident.
However, he added that VAR should have intervened and asked Taylor to re-watch the incident, and asserted that Romero’s actions were a red card offence.
Watch what Gallagher said on Sky Sports about the incident:
Red Card Offence
Dermot Gallagher says VAR should have advised Anthony Taylor to take a look at the Marc Cucurella hair pulling incident as it was a red card offence by Cristian Romero.

Meanwhile, BBC Sport’s Simon Stone revealed earlier today that Romero is not expected to receive any retrospective punishment as VAR had checked the incident during the game.

Romero was certainly very lucky to get away with that. While one can argue that Cucurella could also have been sent off for his stamp on Romero earlier in the game, that kind of whataboutery does not change the fact that the Argentine could have cost us a point with his actions.
