Chester FC V Leamington - Match Thread #33 - Vanarama National League

0 4
Following three straight defeats we return to the Deva tomorrow as we entertain Leamington at home in what will be our first game at home since Danny Livesey was appointed as our player-interim manager. Our players need to get a grip of themselves now because three consecutive defeats is simply unacceptable, so hopefully we will stop the rot tomorrow afternoon in what will be a difficult game against a solid Leamington side who we have only beaten once. It will be interesting to see how some of our players perform tomorrow given it will be our first home game since Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley were sacked, however if we are to get something from this clash then they must put more effort in than last Saturday at Curzon Ashton.

Our last match was on Saturday as we lost 2-1 away against Curzon Ashton in the Buildbase FA Trophy 2nd Round where we were unable to convert our array of chances. The first half was shaded by us considering we were more productive in possession, while we of course headed into half time with our noses in front. Just after the midway stage of the half a George Glendon curler hit the post for us in what was the best chance of the 45. With only five minutes to go, however, loanee Charlie Jolley glanced home to make it 0-1 to us. Thus, we headed into the interval with a slender but deserved lead in our favour. Unfortunately though, we were unable to build on that in the second period because we were happy to sit back to allow a poor Curzon side to eventually win the tie. Around about 10 minutes into the half Jack McKay slotted in underneath Louis Gray on the counter attack to ensure Curzon Ashton made it 1-1. On the 70th minute mark Dan Cowan tapped Matty Waters inside the box to ensure that Curzon Ashton were presented with a penalty. It was a terrible call by the referee, so thankfully we were given justice as Matty Waters’ penalty for Curzon Ashton was easily saved by Louis Gray. We almost retook the lead as a dipping Jack Redshaw effort struck the top of the crossbar. It was heartbreak for us though, because with only three minutes of normal time remaining Adam Thomas blasted in from a tight angle to make it 2-1 to Curzon Ashton. Due to that, we once again exited the FA Trophy at the early stage.

Leamington will be making the trip to Cheshire from Warwickshire having made a solid start to the season. The Brakes, alongside Curzon Ashton, find themselves as one of our league’s surprise packages as they sit just outside the play-off places on goal difference to the expense of Curzon ironically. It is Leamington’s away form that is letting them down, however, as they will arrive at the Deva tomorrow afternoon having won just once on their travels in the league this season, therefore we have to capitalise on that as our home record has generally been pretty good.

The news of Charlie Jolley extending his loan spell here was a timely boost ahead of tomorrow’s fixture, while considering Danny Livesey has had a full week to work with our squad then hopefully we are in a good position to put in a pleasing performance tomorrow. I can’t see us winning this one though, because we haven’t got a great record against Leamington while I imagine the confidence levels amongst our squad are relatively low at this moment in time. Up The Seals!
