FULL-TIME: Cristian Roldan scored a goal and Alex Roldan had to serve as an emergency goalkeeper down the stretch — even making a couple saves — to deliver a 1-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday.

Through their first four matches of the season, the Seattle Sounders faced either a playoff team from last year or a team off to a fast start. That trend continues tonight when the Sounders face the San Jose Earthquakes, a team on nine points through four matches and one point behind them in the standings.

The Earthquakes are riding a three-game winning streak after a season-opening loss to the Houston Dynamo and are tied with the Sounders to lead the league with 10 goals scored. Leading the way is 17-year-old forward Cade Cowell, who has two goals and three assists.

The Sounders have tied their best-ever start through four matches (in 2019, they started 5-0-1), and their +8 goal-difference is tied for the best in MLS history through this point.

Notes

  • Seattle is unbeaten in 13 straight matches against San Jose (7 wins, 6 draws) dating back to September 2015. It’s the longest active unbeaten run by any team against another in MLS.
  • Seattle has outscored opponents 10-2 through the first four matches of the season. That +8 is tied for the largest positive goal differential at this stage of a season in MLS history, with D.C. United in 2019, Atlanta United in 2017 and the Chicago Fire in 1999.
  • Since returning from MLS is Back in August, Raúl Ruidíaz has scored 17 goals, six more than any other MLS player (including playoffs). He also has six goals in five career matches against the Earthquakes, including his first-ever MLS goal.
